Kids have forever been eager about learning new things. And for over 100 years, the Montessori Education method of learning is being used to make children learn using a child-centered educational approach.

Montessori learning is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning, and collaborative play. It helps develop the kid physically, emotionally, socially, and psychologically. This learning approach was developed by Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori.

It is believed that the first six-year of a child is the most important time in terms of learning. Montessori works on the same principle. Children do not learn the way adults do. Hence, Montessori education approach of learning with independence for development. The kids always are keen on learning and always want to be busy. Therefore this method of learning guides each child using the following five principles.

1. Movement and Cognition in Montessori Education

Without movement, there cannot be any learning. A child has to move to be able to learn. Even we as adults use movement to learn new things. Life itself starts with movement. Without movement, there is no cognition. The Montessori environment should be spacious enough for the child to move around and explore.

2. Choice and Perceived Control

Children should freely choose their work as they work only till the moment they are inspired and then they put it away and move on. Freedom of choices promotes children’s concentration and commitment to the learning process. It allows children to pursue learning about issues that already personally interest them. Children make creative choices in their learning.

3. Extrinsic Rewards and Motivation

When children are rewarded for their studies, they tend to rush and learn less. Therefore there should be no rewards as it helps children to discover what interests them most and to give them the freedom to learn about those things in depth. Teachers note student interest and facilitate projects and research to further study. Studying subjects such as math, science, and history in relation to things the students are passionate about further and their love of learning. Teachers give genuine feedback that encourages self-reflection.

4. Contextual Learning

Children learn to think and discover on their own. It allows students to master each concept and build on their success to aid them in developing their critical thinking process. Students successfully master the material and the pride of their accomplishment and understanding of the subject matter motivating them to continue learning.

5. Adult interaction

A teacher is a link between the children and materials but is not the focus of the classroom. Teachers recognize when assistance is needed and are careful to not intervene when unnecessary. Student often works on detailed project s at school and in the community that allows them to work, developing their sense of capability, responsibility, and connection in our world.

If you are planning to try Montessori education for your child or are planning to put them in a Montessori education school, then you must ensure the above five principles. Children are the future of the country and therefore we should let them learn in peace and this is what Montessori learning is all about.

Hmm it seems like your website ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so
I guess I’ll just sum it up what I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to the whole thing.
Do you have any helpful hints for novice blog writers?
    I’d really appreciate it.
